Bill White's problems - Coppcar unmasked

AUSTRALIAN MEDIA PROFESSOR EXPOSES PACIFIC CYBER-STALKER

AUCKLAND (Pacific Media Watch): A prominent Australian media professor has launched a new website exposing a six-year-old Pacific campaign of defamation and harassment by a notorious American cyber-stalker.

Titled "Bill White: Cyber-Stalker" <www.billwhitecyberstalker.com/>, the new website compiled by Professor John Henningham details a vendetta by Los Angeles-based William H (Bill) White against "hundreds of innocent people" in Australia, Papua New Guinea, South Pacific and in the United States.

According to Professor Henningham and others on his site, White began his "one-man campaign of hate" after he was dismissed by Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang, PNG, for harassing staff and volunteer workers.

"In revenge [White] has dedicated his sad life to vilifying the university and its staff with fanciful stories about corruption and misconduct, extending his net to defame anyone who defends any of the individuals who were his original targets," Professor Henningham wrote.

"White's victims include missionaries, businessman, academics, clergy, journalists, medical practitioners and lawyers.

"His tactic is to set up a defamatory web page on anyone who opposes him, often using their own name as the website address.

"He has now registered hundreds of web sites, which he links together suggesting a grand conspiracy to cover up the truth of widespread corruption which only he can apprehend."

Professor Henningham, one of Australia's outstanding media scholars, was foundation professor at the University of Queensland's Department of Journalism and is now director of a private Brisbane journalism programme, Jschool.

Bill White, who describes himself as a "retired attorney", and his so-called Coppcar web network have made Professor Henningham one of their chief hate targets.

Other targets of defamation and abuse have included Papua New Guinea's current Acting Governor General Sir Peter Barter; a previous head of journalism at DWU, Dr Trevor Cullen; former journalism coordinator at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, David Robie; and PNG Post-Courier publisher and general manager Bob Howarth.

Dr Cullen filed a defamation action against White in the Supreme Court of Western Australia last year.

"I have been advised that the court has judged that White has defamed Cullen, with a damages award pending," wrote Professor Henningham.

"The judgement will provide the basis for further action against White."

Dozens of individual aid workers, clergy and Pacific residents have been targets.

Web sites have also been established by Bill White to defame DWU, the Australian Government aid agency AusAid; the Catholic church aid organisation Cordaid; the Montfort religious community in the United Kingdom and the Lay Mission Helpers Association in Los Angeles, the Cyber-Stalker website reported.

Bill White's latest target this week was Pacific Media Watch. He created a bogus and defamatory website in PMW's name <http://www.pacificmediawatch.com/">.

PMW has taken action to have the false site deregistered.

Professor Henningham wrote on his website: "White is clearly in need of help. But in the meantime his vicious and defamatory attacks continue to harm the lives and work of hundreds.

"To the extent that they may have affected financial and other support for genuine charitable and development activity, they may have adversely affected thousands."
